Malasadas

Malasada Recipe ingredients:
1 Packet of Yeast
1 Teaspoon Sugar
1/4 Cup Warm Water
6 Cups Flower
1/2 Cup Sugar
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
1.4 Cup Melted Butter
1 Cup Water
1 Cup Evaporated Milk
6 Eggs
1 Quart Vegetable Oil
Some Sugar to add on Later

The first step is to dissolve the yeast, sugar, & water. After you can set it aside for later.

Add 6 cups of flower and 1/2 teaspoon salt into bowl.

Then pour the yeast, sugar, and water into the flour along with the eggs and other ingredients.

Mix until dough is soft.

Cover it until it’s raised.

Turn the dough over, cover, and let raise.

Meanwhile, heat the oil to 375 degrees.

Once dough has raised, drop egg sized dough into the oil. Let it cook until it’s golden brown.

Then you can shake with sugar in a bag.

Whats a Malasada?

Malasadas were first created by the Portuguese & are very much related to the dough nut. They consist of dough which is fried in hot oil and then is coated with sugar. Traditional Malasadas are plain, with no filling nor any other added on variation. A lot of modern Malasada recipes due in fact include jelly or cream filling.
Malasadas are also tied closely to some religions and even Mardi Gras.

Fat Tuesday is also called Malasada Day in Hawaii.
